Flowtron ACS900 improvement reduces costs and emissions

As part of the recent upgrade of the Flowtron ACS900 pump, a redesign of the circuit board helps users of Arjo’s active compression system to reduce energy costs and emissions. The new version has about 14% lower energy consumption than its predecessor.

“In addition to helping customers achieve their sustainability targets by doing business with Arjo, the Flowtron ACS900 improvement demonstrates that our continuous sustainability efforts also cover improvements of existing products,” says Johan Östblad, Head of Sustainability at Arjo.

The Flowtron Active Compression System is designed to stimulate the blood circulation in the deep veins of the legs in hospitalized patients with reduced mobility. The system helps prevent Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), which is the general description of a blood clot that forms in a vein.

Assuming that a Flowtron ACS900 pump is used with a patient for 80% of the time, the newer pump version saves 2.3 kWh of power per pump each year.

“This may seem like a relatively small improvement, but a large hospital with hundreds of pumps in use will still experience a notable reduction of their energy costs and emissions,” says Dave Newton, Advanced Development Manager at Arjo.

There is also a benefit of scale when considering Arjo’s installed fleet of the new Flowtron pump version around the globe.

“This scope means that the pumps with the new design we have delivered so far are achieving an annual energy saving of over 60,000 kWh, which is equivalent to more than 40 tons of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas emissions each year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s calculator. The energy savings can also be an important purchasing aspect for hospitals facing increased energy costs,” Dave explains.
