Arjo presenting at leading conference on sustainability in healthcare

Arjo is presenting at CleanMed 2024, the leading conference dedicated to sustainability in healthcare. The event will take place in Salt Lake City from May 21 to 23. Arjo will highlight innovations to enhance the sustainability performance of medical devices and methods for reprocessing.

“As virtually every hospital with a sustainability agenda will be there, it’s an outstanding opportunity for us to show what Arjo is doing to help our customers and their facilities become more sustainable,” says Dave Newton, Advanced Development Manager at Arjo.

Dave is sharing the 1 hour and 15 minutes presentation slot on ‘Simple solutions for medical device sustainability and reprocessing’ with two other speakers. Dr. Cassandra Thiel from NYU Grossman School of Medicine will talk about the financial benefits of sustainability and reprocessing, while Steffani LeVels from Intermountain Health in Salt Lake City will concentrate on waste management.

“We are joining the other two presentations by focusing on our product line for preventing blood clots (venous thromboembolism, VTE) and reprocessing VTE garments. Last year we reprocessed more than a million garments through Arjo ReNu, enabling the avoidance of 165 tons of CO2 emissions,” Dave says.

The benefits of reprocessing have been confirmed by a lifecycle assessment conducted in 2023, demonstrating that the ReNu method reduces the climate impact from VTE garments by 54-64 percent compared to disposing of garments after just one use.

Arjo ReNu aligned with new regulation

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently introduced more stringent rules, including a ban on Ethylene Oxide (EtO) gas in sterilization. Arjo ReNu uses a chemical-free, water-based process that fully aligns with these EPA regulations.

“A growing number of healthcare organizations are making significant sustainability commitments, and they will heavily rely on their suppliers to achieve them. We are well positioned to meet these needs and our presentation at CleanMed provides an opportunity to share Arjo’s contribution with the right audience,” says Hailey Hotaki, Director of Marketing & Business Development, Outcomes Programs, DVT, ReNu at Arjo.
