UnityPoint Health Methodist - Arjo MOVE® Program
UnityPoint Health Methodist (UPHM) has always striven to deliver for its patients and staff and sought to do so efficiently, advancing its quality of care in concert with reducing staff injuries and cost.
Recognizing the benefit of support from a trusted partner, they turned to Arjo MOVE for help in achieving these objectives. The Arjo program helped UPHM identify the causes behind the organization’s work-related challenges and set up an effective solutions program focused on safe patient healing.
“Arjo came in, learned all about who we were and what we were all about. They became part of our team, and our guide in the process of facilitating change and ensuring this program was successful.”

Care bio
UPHM is a 329-bed Magnet hospital located in Peoria, Illinois. As a group, UPHM has over 3,000 employees across 52 locations—529 are board-certified physicians. In one year, the hospital saw 58,201 emergency department visits and generated net revenues of $358 million.
The challenge
Over the course of this busy year, UPHM noticed an upward trend in work-related injuries and a subsequent increase in lost employee time. Seeing that UPHM staff were accustomed to lifting patients manually, the correlations between the trends and improper patient handling were obvious—and so was the need for a sustainable solution to address this issue.
The process
After the Arjo MOVE consultant team performed a comprehensive assessment of UPHM facilities, Arjo came to the organization’s leadership with a promise: a guarantee that by implementing the Arjo MOVE program, the organization would achieve, at minimum, a 60% reduction in patient handling-related injuries. Wanting to limit employee incidents and related costs while nurturing its high quality of patient care, UPHM partnered with Arjo MOVE.
The solution
Soon after the partnership became official, hospital-wide implementation commenced with a program that included:
- Clinical oversight
- Process mapping and resolution platforms
- Education and staff development
- Ongoing support for 36 months at all UPHM facilities
- Delivery and installation of use-specific aids, including passive and active lifts, bariatric solutions, and repositioning tools
- Hands-on equipment training and support
The outcome
Since the implementation of the Arjo MOVE program, UPHM has experienced a 97.06% total reduction in patient handling-related injuries and a 99.7% total reduction in workers’ compensation.1
Benefits
With fewer resources being allocated to addressing patient handling-related injuries and workers’ compensation, UPHM is able to redirect funds and focus toward improving outcomes for patients and caregivers. Empowered by the proper solutions and training, UPHM staff can spend less time worrying about getting inured at work and more time providing patients with quality care. The result is a safe and sustainable work environment that promotes the well-being of all people.
Cultural transformation
Experiencing immediate success with the program, UPHM has continued to lean on Arjo MOVE for clinical support. A key factor in the organization’s sustained success has been the involvement of UPHM leadership staff. Initially, 75 departmental and caregiver employees were trained to take ownership of the Arjo MOVE initiatives. The goal was to add subsequent staff every year. Today, more than 600 UPHM staff members have received training in safe patient handling via the Arjo MOVE program.
