Designing Rehab Programmes with Dementia in Mind - a Person-Centred Approach in Acute Care
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that “over 55 million people are living with dementia globally, and this disease remains one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people.”(WHO, 2023). In fact, WHO “has mandated rehabilitation as a core recommendation in the global action plan on the public health response to dementia” (Gupta et al, 2023, p. 376). Practically, this means that wherever you work in healthcare, be it in the community, long term care or acute care, chances are that you will end up working with a person living with diagnosed or undiagnosed dementia. How confident do you feel when it comes to designing, implementing and evaluating rehabilitation programs for persons living with dementia?
This webinar is the first in a series of conversations exploring the improvement of the experiences for persons living with dementia across the continuum of care. We will examine the considerations that influence the design and implementation of rehabilitation programs for persons living with dementia. We will introduce a few of the cognitive and functional losses associated with dementia, and highlight the importance of a person-centered approach to the selection and integration of strategies incorporated within each program.
