Empowering Movement; Enhancing Care: Transforming Dementia Care with A Person-Centered Approach

The presentation focuses on redefining care for individuals living with dementia. By adopting a person-centered care framework, this session emphasizes the transformative role of movement, meaningful engagement, and individualized care in improving the quality of life for persons living with dementia. Participants will explore strategies to create environments that prioritize dignity, comfort, safety, and movement. Case scenarios will be incorporated to highlight enhanced care outcomes, resulting from situations and opportunities to focus on mobility and empowered movement.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the benefits of integrating movement and physical engagement into care routines.
  • Recognize the benefits of integrating movement into dementia care routines.
  • Understand the principles of person-centered care and their application in dementia care.
  • Identify strategies to transform care from task-oriented to experience-focused interventions.
  • Address common barriers caregivers face when encouraging movement in dementia care.
  • Understand the impact of dementia on physical and emotional well-being and how movement can mitigate challenges.
  • Explore the link between empowered movement, enhanced care and quality of life for individuals with dementia.
  • Discover ways to adapt care environments to promote safety, comfort, and dignity through enhanced movement initiatives.
  • Examine case scenarios showcasing strategies that implement person-centered, movement-focused care practices with persons living with dementia.

Rosie Sears

Registered Physiotherapist and Behavioural Specialist - Michael Garron Hospital

Rosie Sears lives by the mantra “Live Limitlessly, Live Abundantly”. Always striving for excellence and best practice, Rosie is a Registered Physiotherapist, holds Masters Degrees in both Advanced Human Biodynamics and Social Work (convocation June 2024), and a post graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.Over the past two decades, Rosie has focused her sights, both personally and professionally on educating and supporting organizations, families and individuals around enhancing the experiences of those living with dementia. Along with her consultative practice, Rosie currently works as a Behavioural Specialist at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto, Canada and is a certified Trainer in the Gentle Persuasive Approach and PIECES.Rosie is a leader in Behavioural Supports, and has taken and taught numerous workshops on Aging, Responsive Behaviours, and Behavioural Support Strategies, to complement her person-centered, holistic, functional and practical approach to dementia care.
