ICU early mobility programs are on the rise. Organizations implement these programs with the hope and goals of improving patients’ physical functioning, reducing delirium, shortening ventilator time, decreasing length of stay, enhancing cardio-pulmonary health and preventing post intensive care syndrome.

What is often realized is that successful execution of an early mobility program is hampered by issues around: knowledge & training, having the appropriate mobility tools & clinical resources, cultural & organizational barriers, safety concerns and embracing mythology that does not promote early activation.

Join us for an engaging discussion as two early mobility thought leaders chat and confer on the influences and influencers that drive success and address roadblocks when implementing and sustaining early mobility programmes.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify the common barriers that interfere with creating a mobility first culture on the ICU
  • Describe the importance of timing when introducing and sustaining mobility
  • Discuss application/pragmatic based solutions to address the barriers and create mobility breakthroughs

Kali Dayton, DNP, AGACNP

Critical Care Nurse Practitioner

Kali Dayton, DNP, AGACNP, is a critical care nurse practitioner, host of the Walking Home From The ICU and Walking You Through The ICU podcasts, and critical care outcomes consultant. She is dedicated to creating Awake and Walking ICUs by ensuring ICU sedation and mobility practices are aligned with current research. She works with ICU teams internationally to transform patient outcomes through early mobility and management of delirium in the ICU.

Margaret Arnold

Physical Therapist

Margaret’s extensive experience as a hands on physical therapist gives her first hand knowledge of the physical difficulties faced by therapists in trying to promote independence in mobility levels for their dependent patients. Her many years as facility champion for safe patient handling, has resulted in >90% reduction of injuries. This experience, coupled with her expertise as a Certified Safe Patient Handling Professional and her passion for teaching, is the foundation behind her ability to teach and explain ergonomic and safe patient handling principles to all audiences. Margaret has presented extensively on a variety of topics in ergonomics, healthcare and rehabilitation, at local, state and national levels, and has published research on patient outcomes using Safe Patient Handling equipment for rehabilitation.

Andrew Rich MS, OTR/L, CSPHP

Clinical Solutions Manager - Arjo

Andy Rich received his Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy at Rush University. Upon graduation in 1997, he worked in the more traditional roles as an occupational therapist. In 2004, he entered the world of safe patient handling. He served as a member of on the board of directors for the Association of Safe Patient Handling Professionals. Andy uses his passion and creativity to help design safe patient handling products and programs that help both patients and caregivers remain safe while receiving or providing care. Andy speaks at numerous regional and national conferences on topics ranging from making a business case for a safe patient handling programs to how to create and sustain success in safe patient handling in the long term. For 20 years, he has worked as a consultant, clinical manager and solution manager for Arjo’s MOVE and PHD Program. Here he has led teams using behavioral based safety, right-just culture, system theory, improvisational comedy and simple strategies to infuse fun and passion into change initiatives creating results both his mother and clients are uber-proud of.

John Compton, MSN, RN

Academy Director, North America - Arjo

John Compton is a registered nurse with a master's degree in nursing, specializing in critical care. His thesis focused on competency-based learning in complex environments, particularly on-boarding new graduates to the ICU. John has ten years of experience working in a large cardiothoracic ICU in Sydney and spent the last five years of his clinical career in nursing education. For the past seven years, John has served as the Academy Director at Arjo, where he shares his passion for providing clinical knowledge to healthcare workers to improve patient and resident outcomes.
