Pressure injuries or pressure ulcers (PI/PU) significantly impact millions globally, especially those  who are immobile or have compromised health. These conditions can cause severe pain, complications, and lead to higher healthcare costs. Understanding that navigating a PI/PU prevention strategy can feel complex, this first webinar in a three-part series on pressure injury prevention will provide a foundational understanding of PI/PU development and examine how support surfaces contribute to an overall prevention strategy. In addition, we’ll explore the terminology and testing of support surfaces, including its clinical relevance.

Learning objectives:

  • Provide an overview of pressure injury/ulcer development, including insight related to the pressure injury damage cascade.
  • Explain the basics of support surface technologies.
  • Discuss support surface testing and it’s clinical relevance.

Director Global Medical Affairs - Arjo

Sharon Maris is the Global Director Medical Affairs for Pressure Injury Prevention. Graduating as a Registered Nurse from North Trent Nursing & Midwifery, Sheffield University Faculty of Medicine, she worked as an RN in both the UK and Australia. Her roles and specialist qualifications within nursing practice and healthcare span over 35 years, including critical care and emergency room care plus nursing education.Driving Sharon’s passion to improve pressure injury/ulcer prevention outcomes, is the patients and families whose lives are impacted. In her role she draws on her clinical background and knowledge, to further explore the practice and experience of those working across multiple clinical disciplines, including thought leaders, and those associated with advisory groups involved in pressure injury/ulcer prevention. These interactions contribute to driving a strong clinical plan for pressure injury prevention education and evidence generation, whilst providing input into new technology development.

Caroline Fallon

Clinical and Training Lead UKI - Arjo UK&I

Caroline Fallon is the Clinical and training lead for pressure ulcer prevention and management and VTE at Arjo United Kingdom and Ireland.Caroline qualified as an RGN in the UK and worked for many years in the NHS gaining specialist qualifications in Intensive care, Orthopaedic and Spinal Injury Nursing.Caroline has worked for Arjo in various clinical roles since 2007 and is passionate about supporting patients, carers and healthcare organisations in promoting harm free care and improving outcomes.She has attended the EPUAP Masterclass and has presented nationally on pressure ulcer prevention.

Carroll Gillespie, RN, BSN, MS, CWOCN

Clinical Solutions Manager - Wound Care - Arjo US

Carroll Gillespie received her BSN from the Medical College of Virginia. She has been a practicing RN for over 44 years. Her specialty areas of nursing include critical care, med-surg, wound care and nursing management. She has always had a passion for teaching and obtained her Master of Science in Adult Education and Supervision from the University of TennesseeCarroll has taught informally in the hospital setting, and formally in LPN and RN programs. She has been fortunate to work throughout the United States in both acute and long term care settings.For the past 25 years she has been a certified wound, ostomy and continence nurse after attending Emory University’s WOCN program. This certification has allowed her the opportunity to collaborate with nursing, physicians, patient and families to improve the patient’s quality of life in many aspects.In her current role she serves as a resource to Arjo’s dedicated team of clinical and sales professionals who strive to inform and educate clinicians on the management and prevention of pressure injuries. Carroll also has the privilege to work closely with customers in sharing her experiences and passion for the Arjo Solutions for PI prevention. She has been an active member of the NPIAP’s Corporate Advisory Council and the Support Surface Standardization Initiative (S3I) committee for 14years.
